Prototype Description: Smart Recovery Watch (SR-Watch)

Overview:

The Smart Recovery Watch (SR-Watch) is a wearable harm-reduction device designed to prevent fatal overdoses and support individuals in recovery through continuous biometric monitoring, geolocation alerts, and emergency connectivity.

It integrates biosensors, AI-driven environmental awareness, and community resource mapping to bridge the gap between personal safety and recovery support.
Core Functionality

Physiological Monitoring
Continuously measures heart rate, blood oxygen saturation (SpO₂), respiratory rate, and pulse variability through optical and electrochemical sensors.
Uses proprietary algorithms to detect early physiological markers of opioid or stimulant overdose, such as respiratory depression, irregular heartbeat, or sudden loss of motion.

Overdose Detection & Automated Emergency Response
When overdose symptoms are detected, the device triggers a three-tier response sequence:
Local Alert: Vibrates and flashes to alert the wearer.
Family Notification: Sends a geolocated SMS/push alert to selected emergency contacts.
Emergency Dispatch: If the wearer does not respond within a set timeframe, it automatically notifies local EMS with GPS coordinates, minimizing response time.

Environmental Awareness & Safety Alerts
Utilizes geo-mapping and public-safety datasets to identify and warn users when entering high-risk or high-drug-activity zones.
Encourages safety-first behavior through a “Smart Radius Alert” that gently vibrates and displays nearby safe spaces, such as AA/NA meetings, community centers, or treatment clinics.

Resource Locator Integration
Embedded map interface connects users to real-time recovery resources, including:
AA/NA meetings within 5–10 miles
Local peer-support specialists or crisis hotlines
Shelters, harm-reduction centers, and medication-assisted treatment providers

Privacy & Autonomy Controls
Personal data is encrypted end-to-end and stored locally unless an emergency event occurs.
No continuous location tracking; geolocation activates only during resource searches or confirmed emergency events.
Users have full control over contact and data-sharing permissions.

Technology Stack (Conceptual)

Sensors: Optical heart rate sensor, photoplethysmography (PPG), accelerometer, gyroscope, temperature sensor, and optional skin-conductance monitor.
Connectivity: Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), LTE-M, and Wi-Fi fallback.
AI Engine: On-device pattern recognition trained on biometric datasets to distinguish between normal fluctuations and overdose-related anomalies.
App Integration: Companion mobile app for iOS/Android allows customization of contacts, meeting alerts, and notification preferences.
Cloud Infrastructure: Encrypted event logging and API access for approved community health partners.

Differentiators

Unlike conventional smartwatches focused on fitness, SR-Watch prioritizes public-health and harm-reduction outcomes.
Unlike phone-based safety apps, it functions hands-free, even when the wearer is unconscious.
Integrates behavioral-support mapping (AA/NA proximity, safe-zone awareness) alongside biometric risk detection — an intersection of technology, compassion, and recovery science.

Intended Impact

Reduce preventable overdose deaths through early detection and automated emergency alerts.
Empower individuals in recovery with real-time information, connection, and safety cues.
Provide data-driven insights (aggregated and anonymized) to inform community-level harm-reduction strategies.

Sample One-Sentence Summary (for proposals or marketing)

“The Smart Recovery Watch is a life-saving wearable that detects overdose symptoms, alerts emergency services, and connects individuals to nearby recovery resources — all while protecting privacy and dignity.”
